Majken’s Staycation Cafe

The idea was simple. School was out for summer and Majken wanted to earn some extra money. At first, she thought about a carwash but quickly changed her mind. You see, Majken recently became the caretaker of a few beautiful productive hens. She explained,  ‘I already had a sign’. Majken and her family live in an amazing countryside home with a beautiful garden. This made the final choice of opening a ‘pop-up coffee shop’ an easy decision.

With a little help from her family, Majken started preparing. After the first week, an invitation was sent to about 80 friends and the date was set, Saturday afternoon between 13:00 – 17:00. Chocolate cake, Swedish chocolate delights, saffran cupcakes, cinnamon rolls and lavender biscotti were ready. A few garden inspired gift and all was set.

We were the last to arrive and Majken was full of excitement and energy. There was plenty for us to choose from and for 50 SEK we each had a delicious plate of homemade goodness. Coffee and juice were included. Everyone had a chance to taste the good food – including one of the hens. Rumour has it that Majken got the bug for having a summer (staycation) cafe and, maybe, just maybe, she will open again before school starts again.

Dairy Princess for the day

In 1965, Mary Ann Titrud Springer represented Todd County as Minnesota’s Princess Kay of the Milky Way. She was from a little village and the first person to have her bust carved out of butter and placed on display at the MN State Fair.

Over 50 years later, in a little village in Sweden, two friends played Dairy Princess for the day. They milked the cows until the job was done. They laughed, they worked and they loved it. Later, I was told that a job is only work when you have to do it alone. When you have help it is play. No butter carvings of these girls. They now understand the meaning of från jord to bord (from the ground to the table).

The next day we separated the cream from the milk and made different dairy products. We ended with Swedish pancakes. They were so sweet, they did not need sugar.

Making meaning: Ice-cream social

'Park Bench Philosopher'

When I grew-up we had the ‘Ice-Cream Social’. My grandfather made old fashioned vanilla ice-cream and my mother baked blueberry pies. This was our chance to eat the best pie and ice-cream our neighbours had to offer. Although there was never an official, ‘blue ribbon’ pie, everyone knew to come early, in order to have a chance to consume that pie you had been dreaming about all year.

Consumption is a changing concept. In medical terms it pertains to an infectious disease cased by the bacteria MTB or Tuberculosis. According to Wikipedia, consumption becomes dangerous or ‘active’ approximately 10% of the time. Consumption is also something the majority of the world is deeply embedded in. Our social, economic and political systems burn or grind depending on the levels of  economical consumption. Many scholars agree that economical consumption is, like the medical reference, dangerous – some of the time. Depending on your ideology, you might define too much consumption as being ‘dangerously active’ 10%, 20% or even 80% of the time.

Sustainable consumption is moderate consumption. One example of moderate consumption is second hand shopping. Donating, purchasing and supporting second hand shopping is fun, and it contributes to a sustainable level of consumption. The money collected from second hand shops often gets circulated back into our communities. Take for example, the Red Cross, Good Will or even our very local Vejby Loppis. The concept of moderate consumption is a popular concept and is being endorsed by large companies. In Sweden, garbage management companies, are making so much money off our waste that they are attempting to change our behaviour by encouraging, not only sorting of plastics, food waste, cardboard, glass and metal from the ‘rest’ of the garbage, but campaign  longer lasting products and buying building supplies (like kitchen cabinets, doors, windows) through second hand outlets.

I want to share my youthful sweet precious memories with my children and at the same time I want to teach them about sustainable living. Many things from my youth have changed and I have moved to the other side of the pond. Yet, wherever we find ourselves, human nature will create spaces for a local ‘modern’ version of the ‘ice-cream social’. If you are in town this weekend, come to our little Vejbystrand and see how popular and fun second hand shopping can be.

Special ‘Second Hand Farmers market” at Vejby Loppis in Vejbystrand. Come early – 11:00 – to check-out your dream items. Action and selling begins at 12:00. Vejbystrand – Staycation paradise

29 April 2016

April Month
04 Spring Road
Northwinds village

Dear April,

Thank you for bringing the sun. We enjoyed her warmth. When the snow fell that early morning, I brushed you off as a simple trickster. Teasing with the sun one day, freezing the evening air and filling the morning with fluffy snow. My cucumber plants victim and I dupe. I remind you, lagom är bäst – everything in moderation.

For you, I have written a little phrase, to explain you what we in Skåne Sweden think of your games.

Despite the fun your time is done
Valborg night and you take flight
We light a fire and you admire
that in Skåne…
maj maj måne

As a gesture of good faith, an attempt to put an end to disruptive behavior, I offer above video.

Please enjoy.

Sincerely yours,

Saturday Dilemma in Vejbystrand

Vejbystrand with a twist
Vejbystrand with a twist

When I moved to Vejbystrand in 2007, I was told Vejbystrand was a sleeping village. At the time, two neighbours warned, after 20 years they were still ‘tourists’ never seen as ‘local’. I listen with a sublime Bob Dylan the times they are a changin’.

This upcoming Saturday I have a staycation dilemma – too many things to do.

The possibility for sunshine invits a long walk along the beach, through Stora Hult, pass the blooming apple orchard and up to Lillaro Café. A delightful morning hike. If you have not been to this creative and charming destination, check out Joakim Lloyd Raboff’s Twin Peaks-like video sommarbesök hos Lillaro Café. With the artists permission, I reposted the video on StayCay’s Facebook page.

Next? Vejby IF football match at 15:00. New grandstand, energetic players (I met one young man on my walk last week) and a community gathering. Sounds like my cup-of-tea. Unfortunately, I will have to make a rain-check.

What is competing for my time? Vejbystrands Cykelfest! We are invited to starters at 16:00 and hosting the main course at 18:00. If all goes well, 78 participants will converge at Hos Jonas at 22:00!

The times have changed. Vejbystrand is awake and welcoming! Love Vejbystrand – wishing you a great weekend.

Love Vejbystrand
